QUEEN MARY ISLAND
ROLLS + RESPONSIBILITIES
Workshop Facilitation / Creative Direction / Team Management / Client Management / Concept Design / Concept Illustration
THE ASK
Gensler was asked by the developers of Queen Mary Island in Long Beach, CA to create concepts for digital experiences that would draw people in, evoke curiosity upon arrival, and provide unique opportunities for play, creating, exploration, discovery and learning.
These concepts had to meet the following criteria:
Grounded in Long Beach yet connected back to the Queen Mary and her rich history
Attract tourists and new residents to Long Beach to revitalize the community
Educate people about not only the Queen Mary, but also oceanography, marine biology, technology, engineering, and more
Create unique world class digital experiences
Embrace cutting edge technology
DISCOVERY
To kick off the project we gathered a diverse array of Experience Designers, Architects, and Stakeholders to help us generate massive amounts of concepts and better guide insights into client desires during a day long collaborative workshop.
THE WALL
Prior to the workshop we identified various zones through the new park. Each zone identified with a different use case and user type. Participants in this workshop were familiarized with these zones and user types at the beginning of the session along with other important information such as ‘The Ask’, the history of the Queen Mary, current architectural renders and programming, moodboards, and inspiring projects (trendscrape). These materials were presented on the wall seen here as well as in an accompanying keynote presentation and worksheets.
THE RESULT
During the workshop concepts were gathered on concept cards (seen above). At the end of the workshop group presented their favorite concepts. Each person was then given the opportunity to vote on there top three. Post workshop these concept cards were then synthesized, aggregated, and prioritized for further refinement and eventually client presentation.
A few of our top contenders can be seen below.
SLICES OF TIME
A cluster of multifaceted sculptural geometric columns are placed near the Queen Mary. When passers-by approach the slices they notice the images on the columns align perfectly with the ship giving viewers a peek into what normally can not be seen:
View of the ship throughout history
The inner workings - engineering, mechanics, people dressing in their state rooms, working and enjoying the ship as they would in her heyday
Opulence
WWII - The Grey Ghost
Each column is wrapped in screens and crafted from high quality materials such as glass, metals, and woods.

ANIMATED GLASS ATRIUM
Inspire guest as the glass within the lobby and lounge come to life to tell the story of the Queen Mary and her many journeys.
Subtle animations create moments of magic and delight, engaging visitors and transporting them through time as they care to the more mundane portion of their trip.
Animated glass brought to life through interactive projections or transparent LCD

MAGICAL BOARDWALK
A field of lit fiber optic tubes run along the boardwalk at varying densities giving pedestrians the sense of walking through a tunnel or forest of light. Lights interact with pedestrians emanating a wave like motion as they walk by. Could help guide pedestrians toward events, etc.
Across the bay the installation looks like fragments of light falling into the water.

GONDOLA OF THE FUTURE
Think Jetsons meet Blade Runner. LED laden Gondolas drift across the sky across the bay to The Queen Mary.
Upon stepping aboard the Gondola the ground drifts away as you look out the window across the bay. Suddenly the windows darken. A short teaser plays on the windows. Think Jurassic Park. Landmarks, a brief history of the QM, Island offerings, ending with a shot of the Queen from her hey-day. The image begins to dissolve. The windows ‘open’ to unveil the Queen Mary at just the right moment - you have arrived!

ARCHES OF TIME
Upon arrival a series of screen embedded arches set the mood for the experience inside that lies ahead within Queen Mary Island.
The structures resemble old world engineering with a modern twist - steel, brick, rivets, regal, massive.

ORGANIC CLUSTERS
Clusters of simplistic, white light (or color matched with the Island’s seasonal experience), similar to sparkles. Think minimal oversized light posts or clusters of larger-than-life delicate ocean plant life primarily concentrated at the entry yet scattered in clusters throughout QM Island.
