THE ASK
JLabs Shanghai, just one in the network of many of Johnson & Johnson Innovation Center’s, asked Gensler to develop Digital Experience concepts for their first international hub. With the help of JLabs, Gensler has begun the development of 12 high-level concepts that span across 4 opportunity areas, also called ‘zones’, that embody the ideas of great science and innovation, connection, and innovative energy; inspire residents; and connect residents around the globe.

ACTIVATION ZONES
Step one is to first identify areas within the site that are ripe for activation. For JLabs Shanghai we chose to focus in on areas that received the most traffic - corridors and social space. Choosing these areas helped ensure high user interaction, opportunity areas for elevating mood in the workplace, and that the client would receive the most bang for their buck.
THE INCREDIBLE MACHINE
An RGB LED array, stretching from floor to ceiling between two floors, creates a three dimensional digital platform for showcasing animated volumetric sculptures. This platform houses custom created sequences inspired by science and innovation. A slow moving digital aquarium containing vignettes pertaining to each of the focus areas within JLabs. A beating heart as a nod to Cardiovascular and Metabolism; A pool of microbes for Infectious Disease & Vaccines; Firing neurons for microbiology and the human body and so on.
SUM OF ALL PARTS
Together we are stronger. As people pass by this blank wall, their shadow amasses materials from the ether, like metal shavings to a magnet. When multiple people pass by or stand in front of the wall, their silhouette of magnet particles attract and repel one another, building something bigger when they come together than they could ever be apart, reinforcing and embracing the ideas of connection and collaboration. There is opportunity to deepen the metaphor depending on the way particles are visually represented.

JLabs TV
The weeks most significant developments in science are showcased on the screen behind the stage. Transforming the stage area, that is otherwise only occasionally utilized, into a reliable retreat for inspiration, building innovative potential and connecting researchers and innovators.
Other pre-produces media streams, such as TED videos or elevator pitches, can be shared throughout the a continuous stream of inspiration funneling from a custom CMS.
